Together We Shall Win

On 9 April 2020, H.E. Sun Ang, Chinese Ambassador to Antigua and Barbuda published an article on working out collectively to defeat COVID-19 on the Observer newspaper. As follows:

Dear friends in Antigua and Barbuda,

I am writing to you with a heavy heart, as the latest development in relation to COVID-19 in this country has been unsettling. My core message is that we, people of China are in this fight together with you.

Ever since the government of Antigua and Barbuda started preparation for COVID 19, the Chinese Embassy has been in close coordination with the Government, to see in what way we may help, to prevent the virus from spreading in this country. From then on, we have been actively providing whatever support we can.

100,000 US dollars has been squeezed out of the our embassy's very limited annual budget in support of acquisition of medical supplies. The Chinese government has shared its expertise and knowledge in different ways, including providing documents on containing and treatment of COVID-19 back in last February, and holding a video conference on 24 March with Latin American and Caribbean (LAC) countries. In addition, with the situation in China moving steadily in a positive direction, China is now able to provide medical supplies to other countries, including Antigua and Barbuda. 1500 testing kits and 30,000 medical face masks have been donated by the Jack Ma and Alibaba Foundations of China, and some of them have arrived in this land. I am happy to announce that another batch of medical supplies donated by the Chinese government, including face masks, protective gears, rubber surgical gloves and infrared thermometers, will soon be handed over to your government, which we believe will be of timely help, especially for the front-line workers to properly protect themselves. We are also exploring possibilities of forging a tripartite cooperation with medical workers from Antigua and Barbuda, as well as the Cuban medical team, with a view to jointly enhancing this country's capability in containing the virus.

All in all, as Chinese President XI Jinping stressed at the extraordinary G20 Leaders' Summit, in face of a virus that respects no borders, and guided by the vision of building a community with a shared future for mankind, China would be more than ready to share our experience on COVID-19 and provide assistance where we can to countries hit by the growing outbreak.

I believe that you would all agree with me that now is time for solidarity and collaboration, rather than stigmatizing any country, or playing a blame game. It is fair to say that since COVID-19 is a novel virus unseen in the past, its detection, research, testing and confirmation naturally requires time. Despite of this challenge, China has been open, transparent and responsible since the COVID-19 broke out. We notified the World Health Organization of the epidemic, shared the genome sequencing of the virus, carried out international cooperation and helped other countries affected, all at the earliest time possible. These are plain, internationally recognized facts, which cannot be denied or erased by anyone.

Friends,

Now is a crucial moment for us all. In closing, I would echo the Honorable Mr Gaston Browne, your Prime Minister, in saying that let us work out collectively to defeat COVID.

Together we shall win this battle.
